USA Network launched a TV show called “Monk” on July 12, 2002 with flair of comedy yet drama involved in it. The backdrop of the story is San Francisco Police Department. The show revolves round a detective called Adrian Monk very efficient in his detection work with razor sharp memory. Tony Shalhoub plays the role of Adrian Monk. As the story proceeds, Adrian suffers a heavy personal loss. His wife Trudy dies in a car bomb explosion inside a parking garage. The biggest blow to Adrian was that all the efforts of capturing the murderer gone into vain. As a result of this stress and shock Adrian became a patient of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Certain phobias also developed in his character.

Adrian’s mental illness became the cause of his unwanted medical leave from the San Francisco Police Department. He started to work as a freelancer detective or consultant in detection of crime. At the same time he keeps on trying to make his former boss Captain Leland Stottlemeyer understand that he is quite able to work in the police department. Monk’s main objective is to solve the murder case of his own wife Trudy.

Monk’s mental condition compels him to behave irrationally in an eccentric way sometimes. So the chief of the police department Leland Stottlemeyer is not willing to reassign Monk to his duties. At the same time he is pretty much convinced about the abilities of Monk and sometimes seeks his help for the police department. Another person who feels compassionately about the talented detective is the second command in chief of San Francisco Police Department, Lieutenant Randy Disher. Early on Disher was not comfortable with Monk and used to state him as a defective detective. Gradually Adrian’s condition and capability compelled him to change his outlook.

Ill effected nervous system brings some abnormalities in human behavior. Adrian’s activities prove this. Like spending excessive time on just sharpening a pencil. Generally patients suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder are given sedatives to make them sleep. They are also kept in hospitals. But the series shows that Adrian is roaming around. This is probably a case of cinematic liberty where some portion of fantasy is required to entertain the audience.

During the tenure over eight seasons of the series the show has gone with some changes. The early theme music of the show was replaced with new songs which have livelier attitudes. Randy Newman wrote and performed the son It’s a Jungle Out There, plays as the background score whenever Adrian gets entangled in any kind of hazardous situation. The song perfectly blends with the theme of the story. The character played by Bitty Schram as Monk’s nurse is replaced by Traylor Howard, playing the character of Natalie Teeger, Adrian Monk’s new assistant. The most heavyweight change in the show is of the change of actor Stanley Kamel who was seen as Dr. Charles Kroger, a psychiatrist who had been treating Monk for eleven years. In real life Stanley Kamel suffered a heart attack and passed away. To show respect to him the show has shown the same purpose of death of Dr. Charles Kroger. Then came the appearance of Dr. Neven Bell played by Hector Elizondo who became Monk’s therapist.

The vital replacement of character in the series occurred due to an unfortunate incident. Stanley Kamel used to play as Adrian’s psychiatrist Dr. Charles Kroger. In real life Stanley Kamel passed away due to heart attack. The production house showed respect by showing the exact reason of death of Dr. Charles Kroger as the character had. Hector Elizondo plays Monk’s new therapist Dr. Neven Bell . Despite of changes the show has not lost its potentiality and is loved by numerous viewers.

Winner of several Oscars and appreciation, the movie ‘Milk’ guarantees its audience the thrill and insight like no other hot flick. As the name implies this movie isn’t exactly about the milk products from some cowshed but about he gay rights activist Harvey Milk. Based on a true-life story this movie is centred on the true-life events of Harvey Milk. In those being a gay was a big thing and Harvey Milk was the first gay to be voted as a public officer in San Francisco, California.

This second movie on Harvey Milk and follows the storyline of its previous version. The previous version of the movie was released way back in November 1984 with the title ‘The Times of Harvey Milk’. This movie made its way to Oscars and won an Oscar for the Best Documentary Film. People do tend to compare the revised version with the original one, however, they couldn’t make out much of a difference quality wise. The 2008 version and got nominated for 8 categories at the Academy Awards and won Oscars with the titles of Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Original Screenplay. Best Actor in a Leading Role was awarded to Sean Penn for his excellent performance in the role of Harvey Milk. Best Original Screenplay was awarded to Dustin Lance Black.

The filming for Milk was also as authentic as its crew. It was shot at San Francisco’s Castro Street and at the camera shop - Castro Camera that was once owned by Harvey Milk. The movie is based on the lifetime period of Harvey Milk’s life from his 40’s to his assassination. The story starts of in New York where Milk stays with his lover Scott Smith and refuses the suffocating life of staying in a closet throughout his life. Milk is met with many failures before he is successfully voted as a supervisor. Then begins his struggle to espouse the gay cause and get people to see the injustice being meted out to gays for being who they were. This process leads him to take on both Anita Bryant as well as a colleague by the name of Dan White who also happens to be elected at the same time as Milk.

The role of Dan White, one of the other contenders who were voted for at the same time when Harvey Milk was voted for has been played by the brilliant actor Josh Brolin. However, Dan White had to face a lot of hassles in his career because of his conservative attitude towards gays as people supported the concept of Harvey Milk. As time passed White’s frustrations and failures grew and ultimately lead to the assassination of a true hero- Harvey Milk. This movie is worth a watch and should be seen at least once even if for free on the net.

Hayao Miyazaki, perhaps, commands the same respect among audiences as Walt Disney for his world class animation films. He made some beautiful films like “Spirited Away” and “Princess Mononoke”. We expected a good film when Ponyo hit the theaters. But we were disappointed. Thye plot is full of loopholes and other departments too lack a finesse which makes the film almost bad. It is an anime which will be liked by the kids but I am not sure about the teens.

The film is inspired by Hans Christain Anderson’s “The Little Mermaid”. The plot of the film is thus: a goldfish falls in love with a human boy and she hopes to become a girl so that she can live with the boy happily ever after. It is a simple love story that has been poorly told.

The film is an utter disappointment to the Miyazaki fans. He has directed classics like “Spirited Away” and “Howl’s Moving Castle” but he seems to have faltered while making this movie. The animation will not enthrall you and there is a good chance that people will get bored after the initial half an hour or so.

The script is the weakling of the movie, Ponyo. A bad script always results in a bad film and Ponyo is no exception. But this does not mean that there are no good scenes in the movie. We must mention at least one which is really good - the one in which Ponyo takes the human form and runs from the giant Tsunami will actually leave speechless. But one good scene does not make a good movie. But we definitely expected a lot from the Japanese filmmaker.

Ponyo(Noah Cyrus) is a small fish who leaves her home and father(Liam Neeson), a magical sea guardian, to explore the wide world. She gets caught in a trash and is swept ashore in to the hands of Sosuke(Frankie Jonas), a 5 year old boy. The two starts to like each other and one day she accidentally tastes a drop of Sosuke’s blood which changes her to a sweet little girl. Her father makes a failed attempt to arrest the changes. Ponyo breaks free and heads for the surface.

A lot of incidents take place after Ponyo heads for the surface. The tides are rising and the moon is coming closer. But why? The love between Ponyo and the boy must be successful to stop all these. The premise is so stupid that I suggest you don’t watch this movie at all. If you really decide to have a go then watch Ponyo online free.

The children will probably love Ponyo but I feel a sense of pity for the parents as it will be a real torture for them. The voice, though, is good especially by Cate Blanchette, Matt Damon and of course, Liam Neeson. The film boasts of good actors as the voices so it is sad to see such a poor product. We hope Mr Miyazaki will bounce back with his next. Till then we need to be contented with this one only.

The story takes its root from the predictions in the Mesoamerican Long Count Calendar and the Mayan calendar which states that the world will be destroyed completely by the year 2012 due to certain climatic changes. The movie moves at break-neck pace and is packed with all ingredients of action, adventure and drama. The catastrophic events like the earthquake and volcanic eruptions are so realistic and mind blowing that you will be thrilled.

Let us come to the crew of this epic adventure movie. The movie is directed by Roland Emmerich as told earlier. The story was written by Roland Emmerich along with Harald Kloser. John Cussack and Amanda Peet don the major roles in the movie along with Chiwetel Ejiofor. The other supporting actors in the movie are Oliver Patt, Thandi Newton, Jimi Mistry and many eminent actors. The music is scored by Harald Kloser and Thomas Wander. Dean Semler is the cinematographer of this movie.

Believe me guys, this is an edge of the seat thriller and is a must-watch movie for all of them. This movie will enthrall all movie goers with its excellent screenplay.
