You might think about hypnosis as a way to put thoughts into people’s heads, but in fact you don’t need to hypnotize people to do this. Subliminal messages are used all throughout the world to covey messages to people, even when they are awake. This is normally through the TV during adverts. These advertising companies have figures out how to use subliminal messages to make people buy their products. So what is a subliminal message?
A subliminal message is something that is hidden in the background of images or even in song lyrics. It cannot be heard by a human, but is there and the brain picks up on it none the less. It is subconsciously taken in by the brain and acted upon.
It could make you act on these impulses and you will not even realize it. You might really like the song you just heard and want to buy the CD. This could be true, but perhaps there was a background subliminal message telling you go and buy the CD. You will never know.
These messages can be dangerous if used incorrectly or by someone wanting to affect people’s minds. Your brain cannot filter the messages you receive which means that you will have no concept of the logic behind it. You won’t reserve judgment about it and you might not even understand it. Your brain can mix it up with other messages too.
So how do you protect yourself? Well, with subliminal messages used in advertising, they are quite direct. They will be a message in an advert that is not subliminal. It will only become subliminal if you don’t concentrate and watch the TV properly. By doing too many things at once, you can expose yourself. Direct advertising messages are there to encourage people, but if you leave the room with the TV on in the background you are still receiving the impulses.
Direct subliminal messages are always used as an advertising gimmick, but if you are listening to the radio in the background you are still receiving those impulses. Except now your brain cannot filter them properly. When you watch TV do not leave the adverts on while you go to make coffee. You still receive the messages but have no control over them. Rather watch them, or switch the TV off while you are out of the room.
