The objective of every Hollywood producer is to put out a film that is a huge hit. The combination of a great story line with superb stars and special effects seems to be the formula for a chartbuster. But, it doesn’t always work and every now and then even when a movie has all of the aspects that allegedly make a sensation, it still fails at the box office. There is no certain formula for a Hollywood success.
Down to Earth - Homer Croy’s continuation to “They had to See Paris” has newly riche Midwesterner Rogers setting an end to his family’s mindless investing by affirming that he’s broke. Not one of Will Roger’s best film attempts. Cast includes Can Rogers, Irene Opulent, Dorothy Jordan, and Mary Carlisle. (73 minutes,’32)
The Last Time I Saw Archie - Webb’s lone try at comedy is less nonsensical than some of his more earnest films; a shame, since William Bowers’ script-based on his own Army experiences had real potential, and Mitchum pleasingly underplays as the con guy. By the way, the genuine Archie Chamber sued for invasion of privacy. Cast includes Robert Mitchum, Jack Webb, Martha Hyer, France Nuyen, Louis Nye, Richard Arlen, Don Tangles, Joe Flynn, and Robert Strauss. (98 minutes,’61)
My Son the Hero - Impressive motion picture in regards to sinister Emperor Cadmus of Thebes, who challenges the lords and faces the fury of the Titans. Cast includes Pedro Armendariz, Jacqueline Sassard, Antonella Lualdi, and Giuliano Gemma. (122 minutes,’62)
Sexy Beast - A retired British criminal, living the life in Spain, is visited by a violent gangster who desires him to work one more heist. Trendy, aggressive, current day gangster’s film has exceptional acting containing a special performance by Kingsley as the malicious perpetrator. Cast includes Ray Winstune, Ben Kingsley, Ian McShane, Cavan Kendall, Julianne White, Alvaro Monje, and James Fox. (88 minutes, 2001)
Fantasies - Sloppy nonsense in regards to Derek’s and Hooten’s attempts to turn a Greek island into a tourist trap. Shot in’73, while Bo was sixteen. Cast includes Bo Derek, Peter Hooten, Anna Alexiadis, Phaedon Gheorghitis, and Therese Bohlin. (81 minutes,’81)
Lantana - Heartbreaking, adult tale of relationships obstructed by monotony, routine, and absence of articulation. LaPaglia plays a cop, whose marriage has stagnated, leading him to have an affair. In the mean time, he investigates the disappearance of a lady whose own marriage is in danger. The film is beautifully nuanced at every turn. Cast includes Anthony LaLaglia, Geoffrey Hurry, Barbara Hershey, Kerry Armstrong, Rachael Blake, Vince Colosimo, Daniela Farinacci, and Peter Phelps. (121 minutes, 2001)
