Yoga: Basic Positions for Beginners

The first step when beginning yoga is to learn how to execute the fundamental poses first before attempting to move on to the superior poses. Learning yoga can be cone in many different ways including hiring a Yoga Teacher, using a DVD or taking a local yoga class.

Yoga postures can be categorized into five different poses. They are- Twisting poses, Inverted poses, Forward Bend poses, Backbends and Standing poses. Students must first learn the correct alignment of each pose. For example, if you are at work and if you find it difficult to focus your mind on a particular job, then try practicing a Standing balancing pose. This pose helps you to refocus, concentrate and get back your sense of inner balance.

Some Famous Yoga Balancing Poses:

Whenever the feeling of being scattered or puzzled arises, you can practice these simple balancing postures. It is important that you take your own time to get into the pose. Once you have done so, concentrate on your breathing and be calm and composed.

1. Vrkasana (The Tree Pose):

A beautiful pose based on balance and concentration. This pose allows you to stand on one leg while you focus on the connection between your foot and the floor. With your arms extended towards the ceiling, you will find renewed self-confidence, alertness and focus.

2. Garudasana (The Eagle Pose):

The eagle pose which is also known as Garudasana, helps you improve your balance and to achieve clear and focused mind. If you practice this pose often, you can strengthen your knees, toes and legs as it stretches your arms and back. It also opens up the Pelvic area. You must keep your Spinal Cord erect and your shoulder and hips must face forward. You need to be careful if you have shoulder, hip, knee, arm or joint problems.

3. Paripurna Navasana (The Boat Pose):

This pose requires balance by sitting which helps to strengthen the stomach muscles. It is perfect for easing lower back pain as it promotes flow through the stomach while strengthening the spinal muscles. As you focus on balancing on your buttocks, your mind becomes calmer and steadier.

These three balance focused postures promote inner stability and a more focused mind set. If practiced regularly, you will find it much easier to maintain a more centered life.
