When looking at what makes people happy, there is no set formula or mysterious secret. Indeed, happiness is very much like any other emotion; a personal experience. And whilst this is true, it is also true that there are many common elements that, in most cases, will result in someone being happy.
Whilst somewhat of a cliche, it is commonly accepted that having a wide, varied and constant network of friends is important to the pursuit of happiness. Being close to your family is of course also an important factor. It is not just a question of having the emotional support that some from this, but more in the positive feelings you get back from providing support.
This dovetails nicely into another important factor; that of giving of yourself. When we help others, no matter the size of the task, chemicals are released into the body which gives an immediate boost. Research has also proven, that if someone is the beneficiary of a gesture of goodwill, they are more likely to do something good for somebody else through the day; and so the cycle can continue.
Despite the nature, and difficulty of the job, many happy people are to be found working in the charitable and not for profit sectors. This makes perfect sense; mindful of the above and the fact that they are doing work that means so much more than a bottom line profit.
Being relatively low paid, it can sometimes be difficult to experience such an adrenaline boost. However, charities are often happy to take on part time volunteer staff; which can help both parties equally!
For most people then, it is in the intangible that happiness can be found, though it is true that personal and professional success, having wealth and owning material symbols of success can contribute.
But really, all that having money does is allow us the freedom to live how we want to live; and perhaps it is here we can discover what makes people happy really; freedom to live their lives to the full.
