Last summer: Commanding tale based on Evan Hunter novel of adolescents playing on the shore in a summer resort. The film follows their games, sensual awakenings, and how evil materializes itself with incredible determination. Cathy Bums was a standout. Cast includes Richard Thomas, Barbara Hershey, Bruce Davison, Cathy Burns, Ralph Waite, and Conrad Bain. (97 minutes, 1969)
Aguirre the Wrath of God: Commanding, spellbinding story of misled conquistador who leads a group of gentlemen away from Pizarro’s 1560 South American journey looking for 7 cities of gold. Dreamlike film was shot on location in remote Amazon forests; Kinski is perfect as the crazy Aguirre. Cast includes Klaus Kinski, Ruy Guerra, Del Negro, Helena Rojo, Cecilia Rivera, and Peter Berling. (94 minutes, 1972)
Mother: Sad youthful female who lives with her mom plans to carry out suicide. Her mommy invests the day trying to keep her from doing it. Well performed, prompted, and revised, although still just a stage drama. Cast includes Sissy Spacek and Anne Bancroft. (96 minutes, 1986)
The Hi-Lo Country: Tale of 2 men in post-WW2 New Mexico who fall in love with the identical lady and she’s already married to someone else. A tribute to the dude way of life and the delights of real kinship, this film has so much going for it (containing Harrelson’s wonderful behavior as a hell-raiser and Oliver Stapleton’s cinematography) that it’s a pity it doesn’t hit the bull’s-eye and Arquette is so boring. Cast includes Woody Harrelson, Billy Crudup, Patricia Arquette, Sam Elliott, Cole Hauser, Penelope Cruz, Darren Caves, Jacob Vargas, James Gammon, Lane Smith, and Katy Jurado. (114 minutes, 1998)
Seize the Day: Williams is momentous as Tommy Wilhelm, turning 40 and a failure by any standard, which’s broke, much damaged and despondent for love. Wiseman and Stiller offer fine aid as his cold hearted dad and a con man he naively believes in. Lots of recognizable faces in tiny roles: Tony Roberts, Richard Shull, John Fiedler, Jo Van Fleet, William Hickey, Eileen Heckart, and numerous others. Cast includes Robin Williams, Joseph Wiseman, Jerry Stiller, and Glenne Headly. (93 minutes, 1986)
Forsaking all Others: Gable is just back from Spain and is getting ready to suggest to Crawford although leams she’s set to wed flaky Montgomery. Megastar trio glitters in this soso romantic comedy, inscribed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz. Butterworth is a treat, as unconditionally Cast includes Clark Gable, Joan Crawford, Robert Montgomery, Charles Butterworth, Billie Burke, Frances Drake, Rosalind Russell, and Arthur Treacher. Stairway to Heaven: Powell and Pressburger manage to straddle actuality and fantasy in a most disarming approach in this irregular tale of a guide in WW2 who claims he was unintentionally selected to die, and should now plead for his life in a Heavenly court. Cast includes David Niven, Kim Hunter, Raymond Massey, Roger Livesey, Robert Coote, Marius Goring, and Richard Attenborough. (104 minutes, 1946)
Digby the Bigest in the World: Meager comedy fantasy regarding fluid Venture X, which causes sheepdog Digby to grow to large scales. Poor visual effects, too. Cast includes Jim Dale, Spike Milligan, Milo O’Shea, Angela Douglas, and Norman Rossington. (88 minutes, 1974)
